So who’s getting ready?

https://nanowrimo.org

Yes it’s time for my annual tune-up. My reminder to write madly and don’t go back and edit until you’re done. This year, I’m going to try an Urban Fan . . . err, Military fantasy? Or something?

How about you guys?

  1. I do it almost every year, but this year I will be deep in edits on my final Martha’s Sons books. And it’s long. I will miss NaNo, because it’s such a great chance to get lots and lots of words.

I just finished a rough draft of a short novel. I’m as certain as can be that my word count for the next month will include a lot of revision on that! So oh, well. I have a beginning story from an earlier NaNoWriMo that I might try again when this current baby grows up a bit.

    1. I created Writers Alternative on Discord, since NaNo is doing some things I choose not to support. I’ll be doing a NaNo equivalent there, if anyone wants to come play.

      1. What are they doing? I don’t do NaNo officially, but I have gotten into the spirit of it.

        1. I’ve loved it for years, but the last time I participated was 2019. I went back a few weeks ago only to find a forced apology amd staff resignation in the forums. Once that kind of thing starts, it doesn’t stop. Looks like they’ve gone woke.

I set up the Discord hoping to give people an alternative if they still want to do NaNo.

          1. Oh lord! I just checked their “Code of Conduct” straight out of the DIE propaganda guide, isn’t it?

            1. There’s one about ‘commitment to openness’ or some such that is literally labeled thus; they collected demographics and want to pick who is writing based on making it more ‘equitable’.

…I can see no reason to apply sock logic to my authors.

          2. Does look like they’ve still got some useful tools up. I’ve been playing with their 51 questions you’ve (probably) never asked your characters and found some interesting bits out.

Turns out one of the characters has no real sense of taste. The other one hasn’t had chocolate chip cookies but is pretty sure he likes them. (Makes more sense in context.)

But yeah, they do seem to be accumulating a bunch of woke stuff too.

            1. I find the progress graph to be immensely helpful in motivating me.

          3. Joined. Hopefully people will keep me encouraged. Now all I have to do is figure out which if the various works in not much progress I should concentrate on

        2. I posted a response, but I suspect it ended up in spam because of the Discord link.

I went to the NaNo website a few weeks ago and found a pinned post which was a forced staff apology and resignation.

Once that kind of thing starts it doesn’t stop, and it’s likely been going on for a while.

I created the Writers Alternative discord to give people an alternative if they still want to do the challenge.

          1. It’s showing now.

      2. Speaking of Discord, is anyone else having issues there? I log in, get to a server, get to see the messages for about 30 seconds, and then get a black screen that says, “Did you know? BooOooOoo,” which doesn’t go away. Any attempt to hit the back button just takes me back to the login screen.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I can’t ask about this on Discord due to the fact that I can’t stay in there long enough to write a post.

(And, yes, I’m doing NaNo. I’m still using their word counter, but nothing else anymore. I think they lost their minds in the pandemic.)

        1. Hard shutdown usually fixes any problem I’ve had getting it to show messages. Eventually.
(completely close program. Repeat until ready to scream. Get messages!) `

  3. Maybe I should take this as an opportunity to get the w(n)ip rolling again?

One of the things that’s been sucking up my time finishes on the 10th, and we’re having a big schedule shift due to school changes, so I may actually have a designated segment of time in the mornings when I can write.

    Maybe I should?

I need to finish Burns Crossroads. I keep doing other things.

  5. I’m not. I need to get a handful of small projects done, and let the brain rest a little.

  6. I’m taking extra days off from Day Job to try to get Texas Navy Book 3 finished and out to my test readers. The goal is to have it published by the end of the year.

  7. Uncanny! Two n’s, please?

    1. What! Even my covers must be spelled correctly? Sheesh!

        1. Thanks! It just makes my OCD itch, you know?

  8. I may use it to expand a novel

  9. Planning on making a run at it.

I’m totally cheating, because I have about an eight chapter head start.
But a month with a strict limit in internet, video games, and TV will be good for me.
(I’ll try to track down my discord UserName and password to check out the group you set up, but participating too much would be defeating the purpose.)

  10. Humble Bundle is running a book bundle for it. I don’t know if anyone would find it useful, but…

  11. And there a group of us, probably already including a lot of you guys, on Facebook. No need to sign up with the official org, if you just need a place to get encouragement.

    1. Julie, Amanda Green and Kortnee of the Three Moms have a year-round group on MeWe, too, so there’s several bases covered for folks who want options.

      1. Which group is that?

        1. Something like EvMoNaNoMo.

    2. I just tried to get a look at your group, and got a response of ‘This Content Isn’t Available Right Now’. Am I doing something wrong?

      1. Oh, closed group. What’s your Facebook handle, I’ll send you an invite. Ditto anyone else.

        1. I’m Eric Hinkle on Facebook, and thanks.

  12. Sorry, late to the party, Friday was busy and Saturday was horror movie day. I just finished drafting and assembly of a WIP around two weeks ago; it’s at my proofreaders/beta readers right now. November will probably be mostly an editing/polishing month, but also trying to put together a steampunk story in the 5K-8K range. There might also be fanfic committed, I don’t know.
