Starting this week, Sundays are going to be a bit different. Some, like today, will be open floors.  Others will see snippets or giveaways. You might also see an odd quiz or two.  If you have a preference for what you’d like to see, leave a suggestion in the comments and we’ll see what can be done. For today, however, we’re going to throw the floor open. If you have a question or observation about the publishing industry, this is your chance to bring it up. If you have a question about writing techniques or processes, etc., toss it out there. If you’re doing NaNoWriMo and have hit the wall, talk about it and maybe someone can help you push past it. In other words, this is your day.

You know the rules. No politics. No hitting. Have fun.

The floor is yours.

  1. I recently broke down and ordered the first season of a TV show from when I was in high school that I really enjoyed. “Forever Knight” is about a vampire who, trying to repent for his sins, becomes a city homicide detective. It’s a 90’s show. Low on budget, infused with late 80’s early 90’s tv story telling cliche’s… and it’s awesome. But shows like that aren’t really around any more. And precious few books have such interesting, strong characters in UF. Makes me want to write it myself. In fact, story number one is halfway plotted now. What do you guys think? Do remember this show? Is there still an audience for the more down to earth UF?

    1. Chris, I was watching this the other day and have to say it is one of my favorites from that time. As for wondering if there’s an audience for more down to earth UF, I hope there is. That’s what I’ve tried to write with Nocturnal Origins and with Nocturnal Serenade which comes out next month. Unfortunately, where TV is concerned, the bean counters just don’t give shows long enough to gain an audience any more. Too often a show is cancelled after only one or two episodes. Then you have the idiocy that is Syfy that cancels good shows to put on wrestling and the like. Shrug. I know I’m going to upset some folks here, but maybe when the sparkly vampire phase is gone we can go back to good, solid UF instead of sparkly and emo.

  2. I adored that show. And I still gravitate toward the more character-driven, down-to-earth UF. (Check out Spiral Hunt and its sequels, by Margaret Ronald. Female protagonist, but definitely not standard, and down to earth about makes it.)

    1. Thanks for the book suggestion. Think I’ll try it out.

  3. My husband bought a used telescope from a guy at work. We’ve set it up once. Lots to figure out, plus it’s sort of chilly out! But we managed to see Jupiter and four of its moons. (I just about claim 5, but the 5th was mostly a suggestion.)

    1. Too cool, Synova. That’s the sort of thing I love doing. Unfortunately, that means driving out of town now — too much ambient light in the DFW area for most start gazing these days.
