Oh, one of these years . . . I’ll go . . . well, okay, probably not.

Must I confess that I hate Cons? Too many strangers, too much background noise to hear friends well. And traveling is getting to be a real chore at my age.

But Liberty Con is rumored to be special, and lot of the Mad Genii, a whole bunch of our favorite writers, fans, and readers—people who we otherwise only meet online—make it an annual pilgrimage.

So, I’m just going to throw open the floor, Pilgrims can check in, tell of their travels, and who they just spotted!

If you’ve been there before, what’s your favorite memory?

Tell us about the authors that you met there.

Or plug a favorite restaurant.

Have fun, guys!

  1. Favorite memory – the first year I attended, getting invited to everything, being made welcome, and learning a lot. Hearing wild stories as I tended the beer bar in the ConSuite [can’t drink, so I make a perfect beer minder], going into the old CityDiner and getting in line, only to hear someone call, “hey, Con person, come on over” and sliding into an open seat and the conversation both.

Authors I met – Larry Correia, Jon van Stry, Monalisa Foster, Jody Lynn Nye, Tom Knighton (by proxy – His Tankness) Todd McCaffrey (who made fantastic crepes), Col. Kratman, Eric Flint, and a few others.

Food – CityDiner (old one, haven’t tried new location), breakfasts – Ruby Sunshine (a little flaky but good food), Maple Street Biscuit Company (good food). All in walking distance of the hotel.

    1. Hadn’t eaten at the old City Diner, but ate twice at the new location, and it was good food and really big portions. Unfortunately my religion’s Apostolic Fast coincided this year with the two week tour of the South, so no barbecue and no alcohol. What a party pooper! At least as a consequence I didn’t gain any weight this year.

Love meeting new people (yes including you and Stephanie Osborn last year). Met everybody’s favorite minotaur as well as Ian Brueme this year. Also enjoyed meeting Nic Plume and Brooke Burgess.

Always wear your badge everywhere, so people will holler “Hey Con person,” and invite you over. Of course, for some of us, they probably need the badge to grok us as a con person.

      1. It really is a bummer that the Fast of the Holy Apostles falls in Con Month. And BBQ month. They were just finishing the new City Diner when I was there last year, and yes, the portions at the old place varied from “generous” to “your weekly calorie allowance.”

  2. I’m chilling in my room. I’m having trouble with migraines because the air conditioning is set to antarctic. But I got to talk with some folks, hug other folks, buy a few pounds of books and hit a couple panels. AI was contentious and Engineering Disasters was hilarious. P-Con is in Dallas in September. It will be small. Hint Hint.

    1. What? “AI was contentious”? I thought we were quite collegial. 🙂 See you at Son of SilverCon in a few weeks.

  3. Late with a comment, but I just got back late yesterday afternoon because I turn it into a two week cross-country road trip by hoboing it on the train, and getting off where I find it interesting. It was my third year, and I did a reading and was on a few panels this year. People seemed to like what I had to say. (No accounting for taste but good for the ego.) Everybody’s friendly, and I’ve gotten to meet Sarah and Dan as well as multiple other Mad Genii and Hoyt’s Huns.

My favorite was probably meeting Max Cossack at the bar last year. Something about his name seemed familiar, and I opened with, “I think I should know you.” He introduced himself as Ammo Grrrll’s husband. We palled around for a while. He was very pleasant company.

Eventually, I’ll give a full report on my blog. As I frequently warn people, “Careful or you’ll end up in my blog.” Meanwhile I have a book to finish, Son of SilverCon to attend, a comic book to work on, and a microphone to buy to start recording my stuff for audio books. Seems like I only need one hobby for retirement rather than the 3 my best friend recommended.
