I got up this morning, walked outside with my coffee and… kinda forgot myself. So far today I have moved the last of a pile of mulch from over a year ago, tidied up where it was, used it to mulch in an extension to the fruiting hedge (three Chickasaw plums, two coreopsis, and a lantana), and got the front of the yard looking like it should. Then I ran out to find harvest baskets at the antique mall, and also the farmer’s market, and the used bookstore, before coming home, unloading my loot, and starting work on a cake. Made a new-to-me recipe that seems to have come out well, stuck that in the fridge, sat down to rest a minute and CRUD! IT’S SATURDAY!!

Sorry, Folks. I really am. Have some pictures, and talk to me in the comments. What should I cover next week? I’ll even write it ahead!

Starting work this morning, doing layout in pots to imagine the growth patterns.
The finished planting. I moved the excess mulch mostly elsewhere, and then just raked the rest lightly into the lawn, which is being converted slowly to native landscaping.
One of the gardening baskets – have to line this one with some big sunflower leaves so I don’t lose little strawberries!
A Sampita, or meringue cake, recipe here.

I didn’t photograph the book haul, but it was a bunch of old paperbacks: John D MacDonald, a Mickey Spillane, a couple of Alistair Macleans. A couple of cookbooks, and a History of War, then both Emily Post and Miss Manners. The latter two were because I needed to refer to protocol on going up stairs in a story, and regretted not having these books to refer to. At a buck a book why not? That bookstore is dangerous!

I know none of this is about writing, but that’s because I put a novel to bed yesterday. Supporting Ragnarok has gone to editors and betas, and will be released by the end of the month. I’m still on my accelerated timetable of a monthly publication, and it seems to be working well as I am now a full-time writer, artist, and designer. But I am taking weekends away from writing, and besides, finishing a novel is exciting and exhausting!

  1. Yep, a writer pretty much always needs to decompress after finishing a book, especially one they’ve lived with for a while.

    1. We started work on this about six years ago. I am so happy to have it done.

  2. I’m with you on the “What? It’s my day already? Aaiieeeeee!” feeling. Between Day Job and a large lump of Life Happening, my fiction writing brain went to sleep last week, and the non-fiction bit got channeled into test creation.

I was so glad she want “Aaiieeeeeeee!” today, because it reminded me to do tomorrow’s!

Between Day Job, and a nasty sinus infection and the ass-kicking antibiotics (good, when kicking the ass of the microbeasties. But also very effective at kicking my ass), it had completely slipped my mind.

  3. You have a gorgeous garden to loose time in! Congrats on the book.

    1. Thank you on both! I justify the garden as being about the same price as a good gym membership and personal trainer 😀

  4. For a split second, I thought you made a pavlova! Hmm, tie in something about writing a cozy with elements of deserts as light as a ballerina?

I should not suggest story themes, I still owe you a short story set in Chicken, AK.

    1. Sorry for the double response
