I had hope to be able to release Tanager’s Flight before 2024 ended, but that didn’t happen, so here, in 2025, eight years after the first book was released in 2017, is the second book in the series.

The Tanager series is meant to be a cosy science fiction story. What if trading ships flew between the stars? What would they carry? What would life be life during the weeks or months underway? Why not make them self-sufficient, so a home base was unnecessary, the ship being the crew/family’s home away from, well, everything else.

Part of the process of getting this book ready was updating the look of the first book in the series to match it.

I’m already working on a story set in this universe, and know how book three, the final book of the trilogy, will open. It’s not going to take me four years to write this one, if things don’t go disastrously wrong in my life. I suppose I shouldn’t court fate like that… but I am writing, now that this is launched into the world, and that feels great, to be making tangible progress and not have to worry about this book any longer.

Onward! And if you read it, I hope you enjoy it. It’s a family book, this one. Making families, finding them, and being exasperated with that one crazy uncle who just keeps coming around.

  1. Congrats!

What’s the relationship of these two books to Jade Star?

    1. Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard Avatar
      Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard

“Jade Star” is the back-story of the “crazy” aunt who keeps things “interesting” in the following books. [Very Big Grin]

    2. Jade Star is set in the same universe, much before the Tanager books. Jade is an unreliable narrator, and yes, as Drak says, keeps things too interesting for the crew!

  2. Yes! And now I need to go back and reread Fledglings . . .

  3. Why stop at three? The possibilities are near-infinite, you can keep going as long as you like.

    1. Because I have other worlds to play in! I do plan to set stories in this universe, just finish the trilogy and then have stand-alone tie-ins.

      1. Good. Write FASTER, toots! 😉

        1. Sighs, rolls up sleeves, and opens the writing document…

          1. (I’m not used to being a good influence. Weird.)

            1. Oh, you’re an influence… does that make you an influencer?

              1. Gad, I hope not. Just like I hope I never produce “content”.

              2. Are you saying he’s committing influenca? Asking for a friend while donning carp resistant coat.

                Warms up purchasing fingers…

            2. DOn’t worry Jason, being a good influence is just a phase. You’ll recover. 😉

  4. Congratulations!

  5. Congrats on getting that particular monkey off your back!

  6. Fun story! Tone is a bit different, but that’s to be expected with the time lapse.

    1. That, and after eight years I am a different person and author. This is why I wrote the time lapse in, I knew it wouldn’t be easy to match.

  7. Please leave a nice review on Amazon. It really helps the authors. It also helps other readers find great books.

I only write a review after I read a book, so it sometimes takes me a while, and I occasionally forget. But for crying out loud, I just ran across a book I reviewed a week ago, where I’m still the sole reviewer. 10 five star votes, only one review.

    1. Let’s not be ungrateful. There are readers who don’t even rate good books.

Rate. Review, even “It was good, I liked it,” because those count toward the weight of reviews.

      1. Raises hand, sheepishly. The Mark I Kindle Fire wasn’t fond of internet, but the latest and greatest is. Will do some retroactive rating and the occasional review.

        1. You guys are all awesome. Thank you, for myself and other authors!

        2. I applaud your future actions!

          1. I ranked a bunch and did some reviews. (The Kindle keyboard and my fingers are not friends, and Kindle-for-PC and a Linux system barely play together.

            And now, to purchase… 🙂

            1. Hurrah! We appreciate your help!

            2. I don’t even try to use an app to do reviews. I just go to my Amazon digital order history in a browser.

              1. I was doing it via the Kindle Library. Go to a book, swipe the last page and do the rate/review. I had a few I rated but wanted to do a review and fatfingered the entry.

Was going to try the browser when things went sideways. We’ve been in a winter storm warning since Sunday and having electricity has been iffy. I’ll see how/what I can do.
